guARTian angel success!

Sunday morning, December 14, 2008 - there it was, one of my angels on the front page of the "Gracious Living" section of the Virginian Pilot!!

On the encouragement of my sister, Kerry, I submitted one of my art angels to the Holiday Ornament contest being sponsored by the Virginian Pilot newspaper. About two weeks ago, I got a call telling me my angel had one in the Most Artistic category! I now have the newspaper section proudly displayed in my studio!!

Thank you to all of those fantastic Etsy buyers and craft show shoppers who have been enjoying my little angels!

An Angelic Project

So back in high school I took ceramics (yes, back when art was still in schools), and we always made kiln gods to set on the kiln during a firing. What about the rest of the arts, shouldn't they have some spiritual guidance, protection, inspiration? They do now, GuARTian Angels -- my newest creation. Ceated from materials found in my studio and with an angelic and somewhat inspirational quotes adhered to the backs.
These keepers of faith and creativity made their debut today on my Etsy shop, and will be displayed at the rest of my art shows this month and next. Fingers crossed they inspire sales as well!!

Art shows, art shows and more art shows!

I am busily readying myself for several art shows for the next several months. While deciding which items go to which art shows, I decided I needed an inexpensive "walk-away" item. After realizing that I have way too much art paper and scrapbook paper, I decided to make these little sketch portfolios. Why do I have so much in the way of scrapbook and art paper, since I am in no way a scrapbooker? Answer: I love the colors, the patterns and the textures of these papers - and now I found a project on which to use them!

Currently I am using up a supply of Canson 80# sheets of drawing paper to include with the portfolios, but my intentions down the road will be to make my own paper - of course!

So here's where I'll be for the month of November:

Support Your Local Artists and Crafters - Buy Handmade

Please consider buying handmade this holiday season and support the businesses of artists and crafters in your area. The chain store culture and global manufacturing has left people all dressing, furnishing, and decorating alike. The connection between producer and consumer has been lost. Buying handmade helps us reconnect.

Whenever possible, please support independent creators and shop outside the big boxes.

Animal Magnetism

I just finished a whole series of these hand-painted large wood magnets. I decided to paint these magnets with animal images only, hence the name "animal magnetism!" I have several already listed in my Etsy shop (kellygstudio.etsy.com) and plan to list more throughout the week.

Hurricane Hanna!

Looks like Hurricane Hanna (or is she still a tropical storm) will completely ruin my weekend, well at least the Chic's Beach art show I was suppose to attend. But on the upside, I've been working like a fiend in my studio...so I'll be good and ready for September 13th which is the rain date for the Chic's Beach art show. So I now have a September 13th, a November 13th and a December 13th art shows...hmmm, lucky number 13?!
